But it you are someone who has health problems, air conditioning in your home can be medically necessary. Here are three health-related conditions that make it necessary for you to have proper home air conditioning.

Cardiovascular Disease

If you have heart disease or high blood pressure, certain medications you may be taking can cause problems when you live in a hot home without air conditioning. Beta blockers will slow your heartbeat and limit your heart's ability to circulate blood fast enough for your body to get rid of excess heat. Also, diuretics will make dehydration worse by increasing your urine output. And while you are dehydrated, you are at risk to become dizzy and fall when your blood pressure drops and the blood flow to your skin increases.

When you live in a humid climate, the humidity in your home will also be high when you don't have an air conditioner to pull moisture from your home's air. When you have high humidity inside your house combined with an extra-warm temperature, the excess moisture can make it difficult for you to breath. This environment can put extra stress on your heart and cardiovascular functions. And damage from a heart attack can prevent your heart from pumping enough blood to get rid of your body's excess heat while you are in a hot home environment.

Diabetes

If you are diabetic, high heat in your home from lack of air conditioning can affect your condition in several different ways. First, the heat puts excess stress on your body as it tries to keep itself cooled. As your body is under more stress from the heat, it has a harder time effectively using the insulin you give yourself, which causes your blood sugars to become out of control. Research shows that when it's hot out, more people with diabetes end up in the ER and are hospitalized because of heat illness.

It is recommended to refrigerate your unused insulin and keep any insulin you are currently using stored between 56 and 80 degrees F. When the insulin you are using is exposed to temperatures higher than 80 degrees F, the insulin will degrade and not work properly for your body to use its blood glucose. It is recommended to store your glucose test strips in room temperature, below 86 degrees F.

Last, as you become dehydrated as a diabetic, you have higher concentrations of sugar in your blood when less blood flows through your kidneys. Your kidneys won't work as efficiently to clear out the excess blood sugar from your urine, leading to dangerous high blood sugar levels.

Elderly

If you are over the age of 50, it can be common for you to not notice when you get thirsty. When you are outside working in the heat, you may become dehydrated and not even know you are at risk of heat stroke. But, when you are inside your home that is not air conditioned, you also can just as easily become dehydrated. 

When the temperature outside soars near 100 degrees F, your home's interior temperature can rise quickly without air conditioning. If you are not drinking enough fluids in this environment, your body's temperature will increase as dehydration sets in and you can be at risk of having heat stress and heat stroke. 

As an elderly person, you have a hard time realizing when your body is suffering from dehydration. High humidity combined with the hot temperature in your non-air conditioned home can make it difficult for your body to cool itself. As long as you aren't suffering from heat stroke and dehydration, your body normally uses sweat evaporation to help cool itself. If you can't cool yourself down, your body temperature could increase to a dangerous level of 103 degrees F and above and you could suffer from heat stroke.
